Steps

Step 1.  Set the denominator equal to zero.

Step 2.  Solve for x.  If the equation is a quadratic equation, you must solve for x by factoring, completing the square or applying the quadratic formula.

Step 3.  State the equations of the asymptote(s).

    Directions:  Please calculate the vertical asymptotes of the following functions.

Step 1

x^2+8x=0

Step 2

x(x+8)=0

x=0   &   x+8=0

x=0   &    x=-8

Step 3

Vertical asymptotes at

x=0 & x=-8

Factor.  Both terms have a common factor of x.
