Examples Done by Mr. Vizza

Directions:  Please solve the following system of equations, using the addition method.

We do not have opposite coefficients.
Multiply both sides of the top equation by -2.
2y & -2y are terms with opposite coefficients.
Add the equations together to eliminate a variable. Divide both

sides by -1.

Solve for the remaining variable.
Plug in that value in one of the original equations. This is from the top equation in the original problem.
Solve for the remaining variable.
Write the variables as an ordered pair.

Problems You Should Practice

Directions:  Please solve the following system of equations, using the addition method. If there is no solution to the system, please indicate so by stating "null set".

Directions: Please answer the following question.

1. A man paddles a canoe down stream in 4 hours. It takes him 6 hours to paddle back up stream. The stream is 24 miles long. What is the speed of the stream AND how fast is the man paddling?

Writing Exercise

Directions: Please write 1-2 paragraphs that thoroughly address the following.

1. Compare and contrast problems number 3 & problem number 6. Which is more difficult? Which has more steps? For a moment consider the one that has more steps. Would you say that it has more steps that the other problem at the beginning or more steps at the end?
