Steps

Step 1.  Establish what x will represent.

Step 2.  Draw a picture that reflects the pertinent information.

Step 3.  Use the perimeter formula (P=2w+2l) to create an equation that reflects the information in the problem.  (Look for the is.)

Step 4.  Solve the equation.

Step 5.  Answer the question.  (Be sure to include the units.)

Examples Done by Mr. Vizza

Directions:  Please answer the following.

1.  The length of a rectangular yard is four meters more than three times the width.  The perimeter of the yard is 88 meters.  What are the dimensions of the yard?

Step 1. Establish what x will represent.

x = width

Step 2.  Draw a picture that reflects the pertinent information.

Step 3.  Use the perimeter formula (P=2w+2l) to create an equation that reflects the information in the problem.  (Look for the is.)

P=2w+2l

88 = 2x+2(3x+4)

Step 4.  Solve the equation.

88 = 2x+2(3x+4)

88 = 2x+6x+8

88=8x+8

80=8x

x=10

Step 5.  Answer the question.  (Be sure to include the units.)

x = width = 10m

3x+4 = length = 3(10)+4=34m

The dimensions of the yard are 34m x 10m.wpe1.jpg (2600 bytes)

Problems You Should Try

Directions:   Please answer the following.

1.  The perimeter of a yard is 54 feet.  The length is three feet greater than the width.  What are the dimensions of the yard?

2.  The perimeter of a yard is 50 meters.  The width is five meters less than the length.  What are the dimensions of the yard?

3.  The length of a rectangular table cloth is half its width.  If the perimeter of the table cloth is 360 inches, what is the length of the table cloth?

4.  The width of a picture frame is eight cm less than twice the length.  The perimeter of the frame is 26 cm.  What is the area of the frame?

5. The length of a rectangle is three more than twice its width.  If the perimeter of the rectangle is 36, what is the area of the rectangle?

6.  The perimeter of a deck is 24 feet.  If the length is sixteen inches more than twice the width, what are the dimensions of the deck in feet?

Writing Exercise

Directions Please write 1-2 paragraphs that address the following.
