Examples Done by Mr. Vizza

Directions:  Please solve the following systems of equations, using the substitution method.

We do NOT have one variable by itself in either equation.
Subtract 2x from both sides of the top equation to get the y by itself.
Take the equivalent expression for y in the first equation and substitute it in for y in the second equation.
Solve for the remaining variable.
Plug that answer in for the appropriate variable in one of the original equations.
Solve for the remaining variable.
Write the answer as an ordered pair.

Problems You Should Try

Directions: Please solve the following linear systems using the substitution method. If no solution exists, please indicate so by saying "null set".

Writing Exercise

Directions: Please write 1-2 paragraphs that address the following.

1. Compare and contrast the addition method to the substitution method.  Refer to the steps in both flow charts. Under what circumstances is it easier to apply one versus the other? Under what circumstances is it more difficult to apply one versus the other?

Additional Supportive Links

You can also solve linear systems by using the Addition Method or the Graphical Method.
